Vintage c. 1920 1930 Distler (Ess Dee)'Over the Top' German clockwork car toy

1920 - 1930 Distler (Ess Dee)'Over the Top' German clockwork car toy Manufactured in pre-war Germany by Distler under the name Ess Dee, the'Over The Top' is primarily steel litho, not tin, only the car body is tin. It uses a rugged, triple gear, flywheel driven clockwork motor with attached key.

The toy consists of girder enclosed "start gate" with twin rotating arms, plus three connecting track pieces. It also includes a No. 3 motor car that is lithographed in bright yellow, green and red.

The car is red with black and white trim, and yellow wheels. It even has a small windshield. A bracket arm extends from each side of the vehicle that allows the car to be'picked up' when it rolls back down the lower track, this raises the car from the lower to upper track. The vehicle is released and gravity takes over. It runs across the upper see-saw track, tilts onto the lower lever where it rolls back into the starting gate.

The clockwork mechanism works perfectly and the toy works as it should. The condition can be seen clearly in the photos, unfortunately the fold out supporting tab that is cut out from the central track section has snapped. I had a small collection of old toys & owned this one since the mid eighties.

This is extremely RARE & collectable and will only increase in value. A lovely toy from a period when toys were toys!
