Very Rare VTG 1897 DP Clark Hill Climber Friction Open Touring Car made Wood and Tin. For a 129-year-old toy, this item is in great shape. Please see pictures and video. The 1897 Clark City Hill Climber Open Touring Car is a rare, early American antique toy famously manufactured by Ohio-based D. It is celebrated as one of the first toys to incorporate a patent-protected friction motor. Body: Features a distinctive mixed-media construction, combining a solid wood engine body and hood with a pressed tin passenger compartment and tender. Paint: Typically found in an original worn red paint finish with gold stenciled highlights or pinstriping. Friction Drive: Powered by a large, squared-off cast-iron flywheel connected to the axles, which provided enough momentum to carry the car up inclines. Wheels: Large, heavy spoked wheels made of cast iron. Riders: Often accompanied by a detailed cast-iron chauffeur or passenger figures sitting behind a cast-iron steering wheel. Clark pioneered the friction-drive toy transmission in 1897, revolutionizing early 20th-century play before spring-wound mechanisms became dominant.

Today, surviving models in good, original condition are highly sought after by vintage toy collectors.
