The model (also known as G-142 in some markets, or G-141 for its Mazda 323 twin) is a niche Japanese domestic market item from the 1980s, which contributes significantly to its scarcity outside of Japan. The Laser GL is a rebadged Mazda 323 specific to the markets of Australia and New Zealand. The vibrant color of this model is unusual for models produced by Yonezawa of that era. The model features opening front doors, opening hatchback and an opening bonnet. (known also as Yone or simply Y) was founded in the 1950s in Tokyo and known to be one of the biggest and more creative of the postwar Japanese toy makers.

Some toys have the label STS, which is possibly an importer. With thousands of toys in their catalog from the 1950's to the 70's, they were one of the more prestigious toy makers in the industry. It is believed that Yonezawa transitioned into an industrial electronics builder. Sega bought Yonezawa in July 1994, creating Sega-Yonezawa. Sega-Yonezawa was later renamed Sega Toys.

Diapet is a series of mostly 1/40 scale diecast toys produced by Yonezawa. The "pet" in Diapet is the Japanese equivalent of "small" or cute.

Their quality and realism made them popular for Asian children and collectors alike, although they never made much of an impact in America. Taiseiya had been producing diecast cars in Japan under the "Micro Pet" brand (changed to "Cherryca Phenix" in 1962).

Yonezawa, which had to this point only been producing tinplate toys in 1/24-1/18 scale, created Diapet as a replacement for both their and Taiseiya's efforts. Diapet rose to become a flagship brand for Yonezawa, which was already one of the largest post-war toy manufacturers in Japan. Real-World Vehicle : The real Ford Laser was a rebadged version of the Mazda 323, part of a platform-sharing agreement after Ford acquired a stake in Mazda in 1979. This genuine automotive history makes it a prime candidate for realistic scale models aimed at collectors, fitting the style of many Tomica and Diapet models of that era.
