Early Tin Floor Toy Train/Bus & Passenger Cars by James Fallows & Sons. Approx: 26"-28" L x 3.5" H x 2" W, 12 ounces, Engine Car 5.5" L x 3.5"x 2.25 W. Passenger Cars Approx:5.5" L x 3.25" H x 2" W, Tender Car 3"L x 2" W x 2" H. Nifty really old & rare tin floor toy train or trolley style passenger car wagon with lots of wear but a great classic 1800's toy look. Made by James Fallows & Sons Company from 1870 to 1890's.
They made these in various forms and sizes and with different markings and under a few company names C. The IXL stamped in some of the metal panels was a play on the words I Excel or I X L. Despite it's wear and tear the train maintains a terrific display pop for early toy collectors.
It has a faint lettering on the engine car "Skip" but it's a little tough to make out but that was one of Fallows models. These are made of a light gauge tin with solder tack welds. The wheels are likely iron or steel. There are lots of places where tack welds have separated, lots of dents and scuffs as well. One of the passenger car floors is a wood replacement and all three passenger cars floors can slide in and out.
We did not try to repair, clean or alter the old toy, we just left it as found except we did make a few wire connectors for the cars (with a common staple). All of the elements of the pieces attract to a magnet except the smoke stack which is a small wood dowel replacement we assume as the original stack would have been tin as well. We took pictures from all angles and sides, so please review all pictures taken for your consideration and use zoom if needed.
We believe this is the complete set from when produced. Often the tender car or a passenger car may be missing. Not sure how to grade an old beauty like this, so we will let buyers decide from pictures. We will say it was well loved by a bunch of kids, but it made it!
Although the one's noted above were also a little worn, probably in the VG to VG+ range. We have not seen a single Fallows train sell that was Mint or even close to Exceptional, hard to imagine what such a piece may sell for. We are pricing ours at what we feel is fair based on condition and size of toy and since ours has a wood smoke stack replacement.
Let us know if you have questions. We did a ton of digging on this, but do not claim to perfect.
